One mile wide and sixteen miles long, Canandaigua Lake is one of the smaller of the Finger Lakes. Its average depth is one hundred and twenty-seven feet but its maximum depth is two hundred and seventy-six feet. There are only two islands in the Finger Lakes, and Canandaigua Lake is home to one of them, Squaw Island. Like the rest of the region, Canandaigua has a long history and rich heritage. Prior to being settled, the native tribe would give thanks for a plentiful tobacco harvest by burning tobacco along the shores of the lake. Today the tradition continues each summer when residents light a flare or fire that creates a ring around the entire lake, known as the Ring of Fire.

Another piece of Canandaigua Lake history continues with the replica paddleboat named The Canandaigua Lady. During the nineteenth century, the paddleboat and steamboat passenger service flourished, and the replica carries on the tradition. The aforementioned island in Canandaigua Lake is the state’s tiniest Fish and Wildlife Management Area, in addition to being one of the few places on the planet where limestone oncolites grow. Oncolites are lightweight rocks that when dried out, crack and are often called “water biscuits.” Squaw Island has shrunk from its previous two square miles as the result of erosion and weather. Historically it was used as a refuge for Native American women and children. Today, it is a fun place to visit via rented water bikes, canoes, or kayaks.

Another fun fact about Canandaigua Lake, it was the summer vacation home of actor Humphrey Bogart who was most well-known for his roles in The African Queen, The Maltese Falcon, and Casablanca.
