Stretching thirty-five miles long and three miles wide, Seneca Lake is the deepest of the Finger Lakes with a maximum depth of six hundred and thirty feet. That said, the average depth of the lake is just under three hundred feet. Like many lakes in the region, Seneca was used by barges and steamboats to transport people, produce, and goods during the 1800s. Today you can scuba dive at the southern end of the lake and view many of those preserved barges. Because the lake is so deep and so long, it only freezes about once a century with the most recent freeze occurring in 1912. At the time of the freeze, many people allegedly ice skated the entire thirty-five miles from the northern tip at Geneva to the southern tip at Watkins Glen. Today the lake hosts the annual National Lake Trout Derby and is considered the world's lake trout capital. Seneca Lake is also home to forty vineyards and wineries, more than any of the other lakes, and draws more than six hundred thousand visitors each year.
